I believe that it started in 1996. But it become incorporation in 1998.
In year 1996 they started from college. -

The question is not the year 1998 but the date of incorporation which is again validated by Wikipedia or any other reliable sources..check out this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google actually its kinda funny how Google can or intentionally messing it up and also what can be the reason for this goof up?
